I played this song live with a Bliptronic 5000 from Thinkgeek.com. I recorded it into Renoise and used some effects to make the sound of the instrument more my own.

On April 7, 2010 PublicSpaces Lab will be 3 years old. It will also be when we are doing our 20th release, one that we want it to be a celebration of this netlabel, of our artists but also a celebration of the future:
The future of this netlabel, the future of netaudio, the future of music.

Today we are launching a Call for Entries for PS020 “The Future Lab” . Our idea for this compilation is to have 20 original tracks from 20 different artists. We will be sending, today, a personal invitation to 10 of those artists (mainly artists that have already released with us) and we will, from today on and till March 15th, be accepting submissions for PS020 to select another 10 to be a part of this compilation.

Here is a new dark ambient track that I have been wanting to make. The only instruments I used were my Gibson SG Special and a kazoo. No virtual instruments were used. It feels good to record with real instruments again. I haven’t done so in a long time.

Update

Pure Tone did a slight bit of mastering to clean this track up. I’ve replaced the old file with the new one. He does great work. He mastered the compilation release from Public Spaces Lab.

This was a great year for me. I feel that I achieved a lot. I’ve been working the Swaying Smoke project since March 2008. So, my two year anniversary is coming up in a few months.

I worked a lot with found sounds and noisy ambiance in 2008. This past year, I worked with found sounds less, instead focusing more on drone and soundscapes. I don’t expect that to lessen in 2010, but we’ll see what happens. I do have plans to explore other styles of creating within my same genre.

I had two netlabel releases with Public Spaces Lab: Hidden Beneath the Soil and Unbroken Lantern.

Two of my songs were included on netlabel compilations. Encompassed by the Rain was with Public Spaces Lab. Speaking Machines was with Earth Monkey Productions.

I also self released 20 individual tracks, three of which were remixes. They are collected under the title of Unreason. I’ll be starting a new collection of individual tracks for 2010. Expect something new soon.

I want to thank everyone for their support, especially the netlabels and musicians on Twitter.

My song from the Public Spaces Lab netlabel compilation, Ceci n’est pas une pipe, has been remixed by Quarterbit. He will be performing a showcase of that compilation at the Netaudio Festival in Berlin. I wish I could be there to hear his set, but Berlin is well over four thousand miles away. It’s a bit of a hike from here.

There is a new compilation out today on the Earth Monkey Productions netlabel entitled Field Notes. I have a song on there called Speaking Machines. It is comprised entirely of field recordings I made of various machines. I then used those recordings to put this track together. It is noisy and a little harsh, but the soundscapes of machines are not necessarily soft on the ear. I’ve been anxiously awaiting this release. It has been in the works since March but is now here. A song of mine, Encompassed by the Rain, was included on the latest release from Public Spaces Lab: Various Artists . Ceci n’est pas une pipe Artists: mapmap, Somio, QuarterBit, DigiTube, SpectaCiera, Evelon, Løser,ambienteer, Swaying Smoke, Bleak Emptiness, IOK-1, Coax, I Buried Paul, Benjamin Dauer, Carl Sagan’s Ghost, Julien Mier. Mastered by: Pure Tone @ Pure Tone Mastering Studios, UK Graphic Design: Fernando Mateus @ Atelier Fernando Mateus, PT It’s a huge release, 1 hour and 45 minutes, but it is all very good. Make sure that you look through the 40 page PDF booklet. There is a lot in there.

I recorded some of the sounds around me as we were watching the fireworks on the Fourth of July. Today, I manipulated the sounds from the recording and added some effects to create this little track: <a href="http://music.swayingsmoke.com/track/fireworks">Fireworks by Swaying Smoke</a>

The slight bit of noisy melody was captured from an ice cream truck driving by in the distance. You can also hear people talking. My favorite part was when my daughter clearly exclaimed, “Whoa!” I had to separate it from the rest and sound it on its own.
